Course Descriptions

The following information is meant as a guide to the use of each section in the standard format of a course description.

Objectives

The goals or purpose of the course.

Intended Audience

The types of students for which the course may be of interest. While some courses are primarily intended for Computer Science majors, a number of others should appeal to students in areas of computer application. See also the prerequisites in the Related Courses.

Related Courses

This section points out how the specific course fits into the general scheme of course offerings, including successor courses of possible interest. The prerequisites list not only the necessary background courses, but also, in some cases, constraints based on a student's plan of study. This section contains lists of recommended courses that do not appear in the Undergraduate Calendar, as they are not enforced by Quest.

Hardware/Software

The hardware and software used in the course, as well as the background students are assumed to have.

References

Typical reference material is listed in this section, including the usual course textbook(s), if any, and additional references if applicable. This section is representative only; the prescribed text for the course may vary from term to term or instructor to instructor. Check with the University Bookstore to verify the choice for a particular term.

Schedule

The lecture and tutorial schedule for the course. Each course involves two to three lecture hours per week. Several courses also include tutorial or laboratory hours that are used in a variety of ways.

This section also includes the academic terms during which the course is usually offered. Although this is fairly well established for first, second, and third year courses, the availability of fourth-year courses may vary from year to year. Students in the General plan should check which courses are open to them. Students are encouraged to enrol in classes wisely and early since enrolment in courses may be limited. Consult the bulletin boards near the Computer Science Undergraduate Office (DC 3104) for details.

Notes

Any special remarks concerning the course, or the course description. "Exclusions" list courses with overlapping content.

Outline

An abbreviated course outline specifying the material usually included in the course and the approximate emphasis on each topic. Different instructors may choose to alter the emphasis and/or delete specific topics. Furthermore, course content is subject to change from time to time as the School of Computer Science endeavours to improve and update its curriculum.
