The Cheriton School of Computer Science has international agreements with a number of top sister institutions. These programs are currently structured as 3+1+N programs where
1. Students study at their home institutions for the first three years of their undergraduate program;
2. They study the fourth and final year of their undergraduate program at the University of Waterloo and obtain a Bachelor’s degree from their home institutions;
3. Subject to satisfactory performance (at least a B+ average), the students are automatically admitted to the graduate program in Computer Science at UW. Depending on the graduate program that they choose, they may spend one or more years completing their degrees.
Currently we have one exchange agreement with Tsinghua University that involves student and faculty exchanges in both directions, and one-way student agreements with Nanjing University, and Zhejiang University.
Here are some of our students from Tsinghua University.
Our Chinese exchange students come from families located in both rural and urban centres of China including China's largest city, Shanghai. Students learn about our exchange program at the Cheriton School of Computer Science from university web forums at their Chinese Universities and from other students there. They enjoy life in Waterloo and feel welcome here due to the large local Chinese Canadian population.
“There are local exchange programs within China that many students have taken. I wanted to experience another country. I chose Canada and the Cheriton School because of its fourth year entry point to the program,” said Can Tang, currently in his first year of the Masters program. He also mentioned the opportunity to work as an undergraduate research assistant as an attractive reason to choose our program. “I liked the practical opportunity to work with Professor Keshav in the CRYSP lab,” said Can, referring to the lab where researchers study cryptography, security and privacy problems to design solutions that affect many sectors of our world including health, banking and academic workplaces.
“The School has a large faculty and graduate students. There are many areas of study and lots of opportunity for collaboration among the different computer science laboratories and researchers,” said Bo Wang, an exchange student now completing his Masters at Waterloo. The school has 75 professors who teach classes and undertake research in 17 different subject areas within computer science and software engineering.
The recreational facilities at the university, living environment and opportunity to join local Chinese clubs and forums in Waterloo, were all listed as enjoyable aspects to campus life by many students. "Waterloo has a similar climate to Shenyang”, Bo Wang remarked.
“Canada has not embraced the bicycle as a form of transportation to the level we have in China but the campus buildings are located closer together than at home,” Most students join basketball and football leagues and one has formed a rock and roll band. "I’m enjoying my study here. Faculty provides advice and research opportunities to help me further my career plan", said Ken.
