Enrichment opportunities

Research opportunities

Part-time research opportunities are available through the Undergraduate Research Assistantship program or the UW Undergraduate Research Internship program. Further information on on-going opportunities can be found on a page pertaining to students considering graduate work. Interested students can apply for one of the combined Bachelor's/Master's programs, allowing them to start graduate studies during the last year of their undergraduate studies. Additional opportunities will be posted as they arise.

VeloCity (http://velocity.uwaterloo.ca) is an opportunity for talented, creative and technologically savvy students. Those with an interest in entrepreneurial development in the areas of mobile communications, the web, and new media live in a student residence with like-minded people. Join faculty and corporate partners as active collaborators and share the benefits of the talent, ideas, and innovations that evolve.

NSERC's Undergraduate Student Research Awards program provides funding for students working full-time for a 16-week period; supervising professors supplement the awards with their research grants. The internal deadline is typically at the end of January; each proposal consists of a part filled out by the student and a part filled out by the supervisor.

Internships

The Mathematic Sciences Research Institute's Industry Internship Program matches students to summer internship positions associated with practical projects requiring mathematical ability in an industrial setting.

Programming contests and challenges

Electronic Arts holds programming contests for which UW students are eligible. The Python Challenge is a game in which each level requires programming, mostly in Python. All UW students are welcome to participate in local programming contests, from which the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest Team is chosen.

Seminars

Although some of the talks listed may be aimed at specialists in the area, hearing about the latest research in an area may inspire you to learn more. Other talks, such as those in the Distinguished Lecture Series, are geared to a more general audience, and may be more accessible.

Awards

CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award

The Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Award program recognizes undergraduate students who show outstanding research potential. Typical applicants are in their last year of studies and know one or more professors who can write strong letters indicating their research abilities.

If you feel that you are a strong candidate for this award, please contact the CS awards coordinator in August or September, as the applications are due early in the fall.

University-administered scholarships

The Undergraduate Calendar contains a complete list of Faculty of Mathematics upper year scholarships to be awarded; most awards are handled by Student Awards.
