Financial Information

Note: The figures shown in this section are correct effective May 2009, but are subject to change without notice. The Graduate Studies Office has prepared an estimate of overall costs for Canadian and international students.

Table of Contents

Tuition Fees

The total tuition and incidental fees for full-time graduate students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents are $2,396.64 per term ($7,190 per year) and $1,247.87 per term ($3,744 per year) for part-time.

The total tuition and incidental fees for international students are $5,742.64 per term ($17,228 per year). In addition to tuition and incidental student fees, international students are required to purchase the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). The premium is based on the number of dependents.

ConGESE Fee Assessment and Collection

At the time of registration each term, a student who enrolls to take a course or program requirement will be assessed the full ConGESE rate (currently $2,525 per course). By the advertized due date, the student must pay the whole fee or submit a letter from the company arranging payment of the fees. Course equivalency for other program requirements depends on the course type and is normally $4,500 for a Master's Research Paper and $9,000 for a Master's Thesis.

Financial Support

Funding for students who are accepted into an MMath or PhD program is typically a combination of teaching assistantships and research assistantships. An MMath student receiving full support from TA and RA currently receives $22,637 per year; a PhD student currently receives $24,588 per year. International students receive additional financial support to make up the additional cost for tuition fees for international students.

Currently, nearly 100% of our full-time MMath graduate students and PhD graduate students are fully funded. Financial support is not offered to part-time students, to students in the MMath coursework option, or to students in the MHI program.

A limited number of entrance scholarships, currently providing an additional $3,000 for MMath students and $4,000 for PhD students per year, are awarded to applicants of exceptional academic merit. Applicants are automatically considered for these funds at the time of admission. The other main sources of financial support available for graduate students are Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Scholarships, Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS), Ontario Graduate Scholarships for Science and Technology (OGSST), GO-Bell Doctoral Scholarships, University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarships, Faculty of Mathematics Graduate Scholarships, and Instructorships. Details about each of the major sources of financial support are given below. All are subject to Canadian income tax. Inquiries about financial support should be directed to the Director of Graduate Studies.

The associated duties are to assist with the research program of a faculty member. RAs are normally awarded automatically at the time an offer of admission is made.

Teaching Assistantships

The school considers teaching-related activity to be an important aspect of graduate education, because it provides invaluable practice in clearly formulating concepts and conveying ideas.

TAs are funded by the Faculty of Mathematics and assigned by the unit, usually with three or four units in any twelve month period. They are normally awarded at the discretion of the Director for the first year at the time an offer of admission is made. Continuation of TA support beyond the first year is contingent on satisfactory performance of previous TA assignments.
