Eight graduate students in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science have been named as the recipients of prestigious Cheriton Scholarships, beginning in January 2009. The scholarships are given to the school’s top graduate students, each of whom has demonstrated strong research ability and an outstanding academic record. Ian Munro, a faculty member in Computer Science since 1971, has been named ACM Fellow for contributions to algorithms and data structures, and in particular for his research on space efficient data structures. UW Professor Emeritus, Dr. Alan George, has been elected a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). SIAM has created the fellowship program this year to recognize its members who have made outstanding contributions to the fields served by SIAM. Alan is in the initial class of fellows and will receive his award at the Annual SIAM Conference on May 1, 2009. Read More ...

The scholarships come from David Cheriton’s donation of $25 million to the School of Computer Science and are reserved for the school’s very top graduate students. Each student had to demonstrate strong research ability in an application that outlined the student’s current research, academic record, and curriculum vitae and was endorsed by his or her supervisor. The David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science is a major component of Waterloo’s thrust in the field of quantum computing. Through the coordination of the Institute for Quantum Computing, Waterloo is involved in several aspects of the subject, ranging from developing the mathematical theory of quantum computing to physical implementations of quantum computing devices. Recently, two SCS researchers, Sarvagya Upadhyay and John Watrous, in collaboration with Rahul Jain (a former member of SCS, now at the National University of Singapore) and Zhengfeng Ji (of the Perimeter Institute) have resolved a decade-old problem in the theory of quantum computing by proving the equivalence of two collections of computational problems called QIP and PSPACE. The afternoon of July 30th, 2009 meant goodbye to a friendly face of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science. It marked the final week for long-time Secretary to the Director, Ursula Thoene. Ursula has become somewhat synonymous with the school and was a constant source of help and knowledge through numerous periods of change and through several School Directors. Gord Cormack, a professor in Information Retreival has won the 2009 INFORMS Data Mining Contest. The contest focused on "predictive problems for health care quality. The two tasks for this year's contest are: 1) modeling of a patient transfer guideline for patients with a severe medical condition from a community hospital setting to tertiary hospital provider and 2) assessment of the severity/risk of death of a patient's condition." Gord came in first at predicting death, and 4th best at predicting transfer to another facility. Read More ...
