Congratulations to Robin Cohen and Alex Lopez-Ortiz for being appointed Cheriton Faculty Fellows. Both Robin and Alex’s three-year terms as fellows began on May 1, 2010. They replaced Frank Tompa and Raouf Boutaba whose three-year terms as fellows ended on April 30, 2010.

Now the engineering site director of Google Waterloo, Steven Woods is the 2010 recipient of the J.W. Graham Medal in Computing and Innovation. An alumnus from the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, Steven Woods graduated with both a Ph.D. and a M.Math.

As reported by the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), a landmark paper co-authored by David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science/IQC faculty member John Watrous and doctoral student Sarvagy Upadhyay has earned the prestigious Best Paper Award at the Symposium on Theory of Computing. With twenty years in the making, this award celebrates John’s breakthrough research in the field of quantum computing. Congratulations to John, Sarvagya and their collaboration team!

Cheriton School of Computer Science is pleased to announce that a new graduate program, Master of Health Informatics (MHI), has been approved by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS). As reported in the Daily Bulletin, beginning last Saturday, more than 300 mathletes from 83 countries have arrived to take part in the 22nd International Olympiad in Informatics, one of the world's most prestigious computer science competitions for high school students. "It's about taking the best kids and showing them there are others like them in the world," says Troy Vasiga, David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science professor, associate director of the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing, and chair of the 2010 IOI organizing committee. "The students participating really are amongst the next generation of geniuses."

Ian Goldberg and Ondrej Lhotak join six other Waterloo recipients who have received a 2010 Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. Given to the province’s “best and brightest research talent”, 80 in total, these awards will provide significant support for their already established very strong research programs, as noted by the ministry.

Richard Cleve, a professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been named a new Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). "Election to the Royal Society is a great honour, only awarded to academics who have made significant contributions to their area of research. This year only 11 academics were inducted into the RSC in the area of Mathematics and Physical Sciences across Canada," explains George Labahn, associate dean of graduate studies and research in mathematics. Ian Goulden, dean of mathematics, was also newly inducted into the RSC. Congratulations!

The Waterloo Black team of Tyson Andre (1A SE), Brian Bi (1A CS), and Hanson Wang (2A CS) finished first out of 112 teams from 56 universities and colleges competing in the ACM East Central North America Regional Programming Contest on October 23. Winning this contest earns the team a spot at the 2011 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals to be held in early March in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Waterloo Black finished ahead of runners up Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Waterloo's other two teams, Gold (Minghao Dai, John Liu, and Aurick Qiao) and Red (Felix Fung, Justin Simpson, Robert Xiao), finished 8th and 16th, respectively. The next best Canadian teams were Brock University in 10th place, York University in 12th place, and the University of Toronto in 17th place. December 5-11 marks the first Computer Science Education Week held in Canada. The Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo hosted CS4U Day on Tuesday, December 7th in conjunction with the week’s activities. CS4U day is a day for grade 8-11 students to come to campus, hear from engaging speakers, and participate in hands-on activities about how the field of computer science is changing our world. No computer science background is required. Participants who wished to attend but were unable to travel to campus participated via a live webcast.

Tamer Ozsu, a professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and the school's director from 2007-2010, has been named a new Fellow of the IEEE "for his contributions to distributed data management and multimedia database systems". The school congratulates him for such a significant achievement. Ozsu is currently on sabbatical at the National University of Singapore.

Frank Tompa, a professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science since 1974, has been named a new Fellow of the ACM "for his contributions to to text-dominated and semi-structured data management". Tompa is one of the 41 inductees from the world's leading universities, corporations, and research labs who have achieved accomplishments that are driving the innovations necessary to sustain competitiveness in the digital age, says ACM's online announcement. The school congratulates him for such an extraordinary achievement.

Don Cowan, one of uWaterloo's CS pioneers, a distinguished professor emeritus, and an adjunct professor at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, has been named a Distinguished Scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery. Cowan is one of the 47 members "from leading international universities and industries" who received this rare distinction, says ACM's online announcement. "The new Distinguished Members are recognized for significant advances in computing technology that have dramatically influenced progress in science, engineering, business, and many other areas of human endeavor." The school congratulates Cowan for such a significant achievement.
