Dell OpenManage Array Manager 3.4
Starting and Stopping the Array Manager Service
Command Line Options for NetWare
Adding and Removing PowerEdge RAID Controller Configuration
Adding and Removing Fibre Channel RAID and Enclosure Management
Local and Remote Server Management
The Array Manager Utilities allows you to easily view and modify your Array Manager configuration on a local or remote Windows managed system or a remote NetWare® managed system.
You may find that some of the options in the Array Manager Utilities are disabled after you connect to a specific managed system. This usually occurs when specific requirements with regard to that option have not been met on that managed system. Some options are also not available with earlier versions of Array Manager.
To open the Array Manager Utilities, click Start | Programs | Dell OpenManage Applications | Array Manager and select Array Manager Utilities.
The Array Manager service is what allows communication with storage hardware in your system. Stopping the service will therefore stop this communication and render any console monitoring inoperative. The Array Manager service has been designed to run at all times for constant storage integrity.
To stop the service for any reason, press the Stop button. Use the Start button to start the service.
The Array Manager Utilities options for NetWare do not include the ability to stop the Array Manager service remotely. However, these options are available from the NetWare server console. To enable this feature, you must load vxcmds.nlm. If you checked the "Automatically load Array Manager when NetWare is started" check box during installation, this feature is already enabled. Array Manager's NetWare command-line options include:
vxstart | Starts the Array Manager service |
vxstop (-f ) | Stops the Array Manager service (-f forces the stop, even if clients are currently connected) |
vxproviders | Displays a list of the currently loaded providers |
Note On Windows, the Array Manager service is a system service. On NetWare, the Array Manager service is an NLM. |
Note Dell does not offer NetWare in Japan. |
You can add or remove components for PERC RAID controller configuration from the Array Manager Utilities.
To add or remove PERC RAID controller configuration components:
Both the Windows and NetWare tabs have a PowerEdge RAID Controller Configuration section with radio buttons for adding and removing these components.
You can add or remove components for fibre channel RAID enclosure management from the Array Manager Utilities.
To add or remove fibre channel RAID and enclosure management components:
Both the Windows and NetWare tabs have a Fibre Channel RAID and Enclosure Management section with radio buttons for adding and removing these components.
When using Array Manager to manage a PowerVault 660F storage system in a SAN configuration, you must set the managed system on only one server per fiber zone to do PowerVault 660F management. The managed system is capable of managing multiple PowerVault 660F arrays, but each PowerVault 660F array must not have multiple Array Manager systems managing it. Having multiple managed systems managing the same PowerVault 660F storage subsystem will cause Array Manager to malfunction.
If the managed system is configured to do PowerVault 660F storage system management, you will need to also select direct-attach mode if the system is directly connected (HBA to controller) to the PowerVault 660F storage system. Do not select this option if the PowerVault 660F storage system will be shared by multiple Windows or Linux servers (that is, in a SAN configuration). Doing so may result in data corruption.
Caution You can change the PV660F setting only when there are no virtual disks configured on the PowerVault 660F storage system. |
By default, Array Manager Utilities will attempt to manage the local system. Remote server management requires authentication first for security purposes. To connect to a remote system:
Both the Windows and NetWare tabs have a Server Type section with radio buttons for specifying a local or remote server. The default setting is Local Server.
If the connection is successful, you should see information about the configuration of the server.
Note Novell's Client 32 version 4.6 or later is required to make a connection to a NetWare server. |
When volume capacity monitoring is enabled, Array Manager monitors the NTFS volumes on the local server for the amount of space used. When the space used reaches 90%, a warning event is logged in the Array Manager event log and the Windows application log. When the space used reaches 98%, an error event is logged.
When enabled, volume capacity monitoring can degrade system performance due to the increased CPU usage. For this reason, volume capacity monitoring is disabled by default. Your operating system may also have its own volume capacity monitoring function. If so, see your operating system documentation for more information.
To enable volume capacity monitoring:
For information related to volume capacity monitoring, see the following:
To add or remove SNMP configuration components on NetWare:
You can specify whether or not the Array Manager console displays pop-up messages. Pop-up messages are displayed in response to system and user errors. By default, pop-up messages are displayed. You can disable or enable the display of pop-up messages by using the Display Messages option.
To disable or enable the pop-up messages:
Array Manager also displays event messages in the event log and generates SNMP traps. for more information on event log messages and SNMP traps, see the following:
The Array Manager Utilities automatically checks the versions of required or recommended hardware and software on your local system. This includes:
Internet Explorer is required for viewing the online help. For more information on the version requirements, see "Online Help Requirements."
Some controllers have their own management application that may not be compatible with Array Manager. Such is the case with the Flexible Array Storage Tool (FAST). Array Manager cannot be installed on a system that has FAST installed. The Array Manager Utilities check whether FAST is installed on the system.
Array Manager requires that the Dell OpenManage Server Agent 4.0.0 or later be installed on the managed system in order to provide thermal shutdown (when an enclosure becomes too hot or cold) for the Dell PowerVault 20xS and 21xS enclosures.
The Versions tab in the Array Manager Utilities displays the drivers and firmware currently installed on your system. The Versions tab also indicates whether the drivers and firmware on your system meet the requirements of the version of Array Manager installed on your system.
During Array Manager installation, you may need to reboot the system in order for Array Manager to detect the currently installed drivers and firmware. The Array Manager installation process prompts you to reboot your system at the appropriate time.
See the Readme file for driver and firmware requirements, as well as other system requirements. For any updates that occur between software releases, refer to the Dell support site at http://support.dell.com.
