OFIS Notes from 1 December, 2010

Today

Marlon: can import GSO update to dev, up to gov't count date. Will bug OOR about their data. then imports will be done.

  • Olga: looked at GSO data; one extra student, looks like OOR error.
  • Marlon looking at postgres apps: php pg admin is fairly bad, he thinks. looking at "pg admin" desktop app... learning about postgres differences from mysql. (will offer us: SQL2008 (vs. SQL99); features such as recursive queries, better reports)
  • Olga: should we plot schema and refactor any aspects of database? Marlon: we know Faculty member table should be refactored.
    • Olga: could we fix the "lifetime count of publications" needing to be manually added every year? and "last 6 years" - by replacing the manual total with "total not entered in OFIS"? Yes, we can.
  • Vu: will be away through end of 2010. plans for next year: with cs student co-op: schema diagram, "api for database" in case we do switch to postgres. spent time on RTF; making RTF generator. (isn't ready for this year's merit report)
    • Olga: contributions: technical reports lose fields when become RTF? Vu: correct up to last conversation with Beth. If you give me business rules, I'll fix it. These are older records not bibliograph. maybe just historic? also, problems with page-ranges: might be fixed, after our discussions / fixes this summer?
  • Daniel: Hope Research Book changes are done in a week. Watitis talk: review slides? will send around tomorrow.
    • Question from prof: Awards and Recognitions: should we default to "Display on Web"? (award: that choice is obvious; but on contributions page, it can be difficult to remember to change it). Fairly long discussion led to 4 options: 1) batch-edit from the list-page that will set all/none 2) replace dropdown with unset but mandatory radio-buttons 3) preferences page 4) default "show on web" for some sections. Considering the annoying parts: most annoying part is editing many publications to add "show on web"; requires many clicks. some sort of table-view with radio buttons for edits would be useful.
    • Daniel will ask a few CS users if they have a preference for changing the default, and/or switching to radio buttons for "show on web".

Future Tasks

  • Daniel: move expertise keywords live; finish (and share) WatITis slides; finish Research Book, possibly next week?
    • ask faculty members: display on web?
    • process for improving CS teaching roster data to include faculty userid?
    • published book has (accepted) date?
