MEMCON: Mobile Energy Monitoring and Control

MEMCON is an application that uses Microsoft HomeOS to alert homeowners of abnormal energy consumption in their home. It interacts with a Current Cost Envi device to monitor the aggregate power consumption of a home.

Sizing the Electrical Grid

Smart Grid

Because of the large capital investment required for development of the electrical grid, efficient development planning is of essential importance to electrical utilities. We use queuing theory and teletraffic analysis to size transformers and storage batteries jointly. We show that this problem is identical to sizing links and buffers in computer networks.

Home Energy Measurement

A measurement node

In this project, we develop a distributed testbed to obtain a fine-grained measurement of active power consumptions of dwellings. Our testbed consists of 30 measurement nodes; each node has an Envi device to measure the instantaneous power consumption and a netbook to collect and send the measured data to our server. This data could be used in many different applications such as storage sizing, time-of-use pricing, and demand response.

Building Monitoring

A weatherduck sensor

We developed a testbed to monitor temperature, sound, light, and wind velocity at the time scale of seconds to improve heating and cooling efficiency in commercial buildings. This testbed includes 24 wired Weatherduck sensors deployed in the Davis center, University of Waterloo.
