KW school information

The choices among schools include public schools, publicly funded Catholic schools, French schools (also public and, I believe, Catholic), and private schools (such as The Kitchener-Waterloo Bilingual School, St John's-Kilmarnock, Sunshine Montessori, and Rockway Mennonite Collegiate). If I'm not mistaken, anyone can choose between the public and separate schools, but the French schools are open only to families with at least one native speaker of French. As is typical of many institutions in Canada, there is less disparity among public shcools than in many places in the United States: there are neither the peaks (extremely privileged schools in rich neighbourhoods) nor the troughs (undersupplied schools in poor neighbourhoods).

There are, of course, individual variations, but all meet a reasonable minimum standard, and are all bound to cover a provincially set curriculum. Some schools offer a French immersion program; starting in grade 1, half of the day is taught in French. Students in this program can continue in it through high school, obtaining a special French immersion degree.

At the high school level there are also a number of other special programs, including a performing arts magnet school (click on "The Arts"), a school offering an International Baccalaureate (click on "International Studies"), and a school offering AP courses and exams.

At the elementary level there are also enrichment programs, ranging from pull-out programs at the school to full-time congregated classes gathering students from across the region. To compare among schools, it is possible to obtain the results of standardized Grade 3, 6, and 9 testing. However, the results can be misleading, as some of the schools have special congregated classes (e.g. enrichment) that skew their results.
