His Brain

I've had my "head examined" on more than one occasion. In particular, I have had a couple magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans done of my head.
  1. One was a study done at UBC Hospital, from which I acquired 18 sagital slices and 18 axial slices.
  2. The other study was a functional MRI, a special kind of scan to find out what part of my brain is active when I am presented with certain stimulae. Along with the functional scan, I also had an anatomic scan containing 129 sagital slices.

These MRI scans are T1 weighted, which means that bone and air are black, while bone marrow and other soft tissues are gray or white. Blood that is just arriving to the head will also appear black.

Sagital Slices

Interesting notes
  • Images 4, 16 and 17 - you can see the lens of the eye, and that the eyelids are closed
  • Image 5 - check out the optic nerve
  • Image 9 - curved dark gray boomerang shape in the centre of the brain is the corpus callosum , the interface between the left and right brain
  • Image 10 - dark curved lines in the brain are blood vesels

Axial Slices

Interesting notes
  • Images 1-4 - black regions behind nose are sinus cavities
  • Image 4 - cochlea of the left inner ear (snail-like shape in the dark region, at the end of the internal auditory meatus)
  • Image 5 - small, dark circles in the centre and the back of the brain are arteries
  • Image 8 and 9 - eyelids and lenses
  • Images 5-10 - dark gray tissue in cheaks is jaw muscle
  • Image 13 - guess what the curved dark line on the left side of the brain is
