Continuous and Adaptive Query Optimization

• An IBM CAS project
• This project studies enhancing the capabilities of current query optimization and execution to cope with the continuously changing computing environments. We investigate developing query optimization techniques that are highly adaptive to changes in the computing environment and to lack of accurate and up-to-date statistics. The following contributions have all been under this project:

1. Collecting and Maintaining Just-in-Time Statistics
   JITS is a system for proactively collecting query-specific statistics during query compilation. The system employs a lightweight sensitivity analysis to choose which statistics to collect by making use of previously collected statistics and database activity patterns. The collected statistics are materialized and incrementally updated for later reuse.
   
   
2. StatAdvisor: Recommending Statistical Views
   StatAdvisor is a system for recommending statistical views (statistics on query expressions) for a given SQL workload. The StatAdvisor addresses the special characteristics of statistical views with respect to view matching and benefit estimation, and introduces a novel plan-based candidate enumeration method, and a benefit-based analysis to determine the most useful statistical views.
