Members of the Networks and Distributed Systems Group work on many research topics in computer networking and distributed computing systems, ranging from network protocol design to the design and analysis of complex distributed systems. Research activity covers a broad variety of networks and distributed systems: wireless networks/mobile computing, broadband networks, the Internet, web servers, web services, and complex distributed applications. The following list includes some of the specific topics being investigated.
We use many approaches in our work, reflecting our varied expertise. This includes workload characterization, architectural design, algorithm design, theoretical analysis, simulation, and the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of prototype systems.
Almost all computer systems today interact over networks with other computer systems. Some interactions are apparently straightforward, such as electronic mail or web browsing, but others are intrinsically complex. Even simple interactions may present complex problems in some circumstances, such as when data volumes are very high, when systems move or become disconnected during interactions, and when privacy and security are major concerns. The ubiquity of networks and distributed systems means that new problems are discovered as new applications are developed and old problems require new solutions when faced with novel network infrastructure. The Networks and Distributed Systems group therefore uses its varied expertise to find appropriate solutions to problems that have practical impact.
