Overview

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) focuses on the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems. In a nutshell, it examines how to make systems easier-to-use, more efficient, and more compelling. In pursuit of these goals, HCI draws upon a wide range of fields, including the behavioural sciences, and the design and engineering disciplines.

The HCI research lab at Waterloo has expertise in both the design and analysis of interactive technologies. Through in-depth studies of users in real-world contexts, we develop new systems that better fit the way people live, work, and play. Our expertise in quantitative methods and modeling has also enabled us to create "smart" interfaces that utilize predictive models of users and their needs. Finally, our design expertise has led to a number of innovative interaction techniques.

Current research projects focus on gesture-based interaction, pen computing, software instrumentation, novel applications of search engine data, and usability issues in the open source software community.

Past and on-going collaborations of Dr. Lank and Dr. Terry include work with Nortel Networks, the Palo Alto Research Center, Microsoft Research, Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), Ricoh Innovations, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Toronto.
