"These are fun jobs. They're not just jobs where you're stuck in a cubby hole writing code your whole life. They really are about changing the world."
Bill Gates at the University of Waterloo, February 21, 2008
As industry is increasingly interested in people with advanced degrees, you might consider obtaining a Master's degree or Ph.D. after graduation. At the University of Waterloo, you can get a head start on research by participating in a research project. In 2003-2004, UW researchers attracted more than CAD 100 million in research funding. In our special combined degree program, you can graduate with Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the same time. UW alumni can be found as professors at top universities throughout Canada and around the world, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto, and the University of California at Berkeley.
Take advantage of our international connections: academic exchanges are available with universities in Australia, Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand. Read what Math Faculty students had to say about their academic experiences overseas.
Our students benefit greatly from daily interaction with well-known professors, whose leading-edge research programs allow us to teach the latest technologies. Many high-tech companies trace their roots to UW, including Waterloo Maple, iAnywhere Solutions, Virtek Vision International, OpenText, Dalsa, Certicom, Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, Sirfic Wireless, Senesco Technologies, and Research in Motion.
Employment opportunities in the IT industry are increasing: in the decade 2002 to 2012, growth in new American IT jobs is expected to be 3.1% per year, outpacing a 1.4% per year increase in overall employment, and IT jobs will make up 70% of all projected science and engineering job openings. The same projections are expected in Canada.
Employers who are looking to hire skilled IT professionals will pay, on average, 5.3 percent more in 2008 than they did this year, according to the just-released Robert Half Technology's 2008 IT Salary Guide. As a comparison, the Consumer Price Index rose 2.8 percent this past year. Read more...
