Laboratory Safety and Emergency Procedures
General Laboratory Regulations
Students using our computer labs must be informed about the following
MFCF lab regulations and emergency procedures. Please warn students that
failure to abide may result in suspension of their computing
privileges.
- No food or drink is permitted in this room. You will be held
responsible if you damage equipment.
- Please leave coats, knapsacks, etc. in your locker, or on the
tables at the back of the room (where available).
- Computers are for those doing course work. It is inappropriate to
use resources for personal use. Please read:
http://www.math.uwaterloo.ca/mfcf/policies/usage/account.html
- Please keep noise to a minimum; computing areas are to be treated
with the same respect that would be given to a study area. Use
headphones to listen to music.
- Students are responsible for the proper disposal of used material
in appropriately labelled containers.
Reporting Problems
- Report Network/Server problems to the ISA or TA on duty, or to
the MFCF Operator in MC 3015 at other times. Operator hours are posted
outside MC 3015. For emergency problems outside production hours,
call UW Campus Police at 4911 and they will attempt to contact
someone. Response is on a "best effort" basis, during normal waking
hours (e.g. 0800-2100), and is not guaranteed. An emergency is a
situation where you have no alternatives for completing work that
cannot wait until a scheduled person comes in.
- Report all other problems (eg. printing, software, hardware, room
comfort, accounts), via the Lab Operations disk, accessible through
the MacJANET system.
Accidents
At the beginning of the first laboratory period, students should
report to the lab staff any personal handicap or condition which might
jeopardise their own safety or the safety of their classmates. Students
should report immediately to the lab staff any accident whatsoever, be it
a cut, burn, or any other type of accident. Even a minor accident, such
as a small cut on a finger, must be reported. Students will be given
first aid, or taken to the Campus Health Centre or the hospital,
depending on the nature and extent of the injury or illness.
In Case Of Emergency
Safety and fire alarm posters are located on the bulletin board or
wall of each lab for everyone's safety. It is your responsibility to read
them and follow the instructions during an emergency. You should know the
location of the nearest emergency exit, as well as the location of the
fire extinguisher in the room. You should also ensure that all students
are aware of the regulations and emergency procedures. Emergency
personnel can be reached by dialling: 4911 for on-campus emergency
personnel or 9911 for off-campus emergency operators
Emergency Evacuation of Buiuldings
If the fire alarm rings and there has been no warning of a fire alarm
test, immediately leave the building by the nearest exit. Avoid the
elevators. Do not re-enter the building until a UW fire warden
(identified by his/her red cap) gives you permission to enter the
building.
The staff reponsibilities are:
- Evacuate the lab or classroom in an orderly fashion, ensuring that
all doors are closed after the students have left the room and that
students use the safest exit route via stairways. (Avoid the elevators
because they are automatically disabled in case of a fire.)
- In the event a person with a disability is unable to leave the
building when the fire alarm is sounded, he or she should be escorted
to a stairwell landing. One person should remain on the landing with
the disabled person until emergency personnel arrive (fire or
security).
- No attempt should be made to remove a person with a disability
beyond the stairwell landing unless there is imminent danger to the
person at that area, i.e., smoke or fire is present. A second person
should advise a fire warden or security officer of the disabled
person's location, and then follow the official's directives on
whether further evacuation is necessary.
- The above instructions are vital to the safety of all persons
unable to use stairways in an emergency.
