Power Outage - Multiple Systems Down — Sunday May 20, 2012 @ 7:30AM

There appears to have been a power outage around 7:30 Sunday morning. Not all systems have recovered. E.g. imaps.cs, smtps.cs and postgres.cs are down. We hope that will be fixed by the end of the day.

Problems with Nexus podium computers -- 2012-5-1

The classroom podium computers in MC, DC and elsewhere (part of the central e-classroom system), were upgraded to Windows 7 between terms. We have observed some problems with logging into the systems since the upgrade.

IST and CSCF are working on a resolution; unfortunately no time estimate is available. Instructors and others who need computing resources in the classroom should contact their Point-of-Contact for alternate arrangements.

POP email service on mail.cs.uwaterloo.ca discontinued

The POP email service previously available on mail.cs.uwaterloo.ca has been terminated (effective April 16, 2012). If this change has impacted you, please contact your Point of Contact for assistance.

Changes to SCS teaching environment, March-April 2012

Upgrade of Ubuntu 9.10 systems

CSCF is preparing to upgrade the older Linux systems in the teaching environment. The first stage of these changes is the removal of the old Ubuntu 9.10 system called "linux000.student.cs.uwaterloo.ca". Over the next few weeks, some of the 9.10 systems will be upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. Further details will be announced as they become known.

Termination of FTP services

Except for some specialized applications, the old, insecure FTP services in the teaching environment have been terminated. Please use "sftp" or "scp" instead. If you require assistance, please contact CSCF.

Mac lab upgrades

During April, the iMac systems in mc3027 and mc3003 (partial) will be upgraded to new hardware and software. This work will not begin until the courses using those labs have written their exams, and is planned to be completed by the start of the spring term. Please contact Trevor Grove in CSCF (trevor.grove @ uwaterloo.ca) if you have questions.

Connect email accounts created for all SCS faculty, staff and grad students — 2011/10/18

On Tuesday (2011/10/18) morning, IST created "Connect" Exchange Server email/calendar accounts for all SCS faculty, staff and grad students who didn't already have one. The account creation should not have affect email delivery. People may now move their email to "Connect" at their own convenience. IST has also provided instructions on adding "Connect" access to your Mail Client .

Help, from both CSCF and IST, is available for those who need it.

mail.cs to be updated by May 15 2012

A replacement service is planned to provide mail forwarding of @cs mail, both personal and mailing lists, to @uwaterloo.ca. All CS staff, faculty, and grad students are encouraged to move their email to the central "Connect" system mentioned above.

Core environment Solaris to Ubuntu migration

Work is ongoing on a new Ubuntu Linux server for the core (non-teaching) environment. You can try out preproduction state of the new Ubuntu 10.10 image via "ssh ubuntu-1010.cs.uwaterloo.ca". CS faculty and staff currently using Solaris servers in the core environment should contact a CSCF staff member if they will need assistance migrating their computing use in the core to Linux.

Getting Help

Please contact the Math Faculty Help Centre for assistance, or use the UNIX "gripe" command to submit a problem report. The results end up in a newsgroup, which is watched by support staff.
