Message Filters

With message filters, Thunderbird gives users the option of automatically sorting and moving received messages to a designated folder.

1. Creating message filters

To create a new message filter:

  1. In the menu, select Tools > Message Filters.
  2. In the right hand menu of the popup window, click on "New".
  3. Edit all your preferences.
  4. Name your filter.
  5. Enter parameters for the message filter. To enter more than one parameter, click "More".
  6. Click on one or more of the boxes under "Perform these actions" to further personalize the message filter.
  7. Click "Ok" to save the message filter.
  8. Click the red X in the top right corner to close "Message Filters".

2. Deleting message filters

To delete an existing message filter:

  1. In the menu, select Tools > Message Filters.
  2. Click on the name of the message filter you want to delete.
  3. In the right hand menu of the popup window, click on "Delete".
  4. Click "Ok" to confirm the deletion.
  5. Click the red "X" in the top right corner to close "Message Filters".

3. Editing message filters

To edit an existing message filter:

  1. In the menu, select Tools > Message Filters.
  2. Click on the name of the message filter you want to edit.
  3. In the right hand menu of the popup window, click on "Edit".
  4. Edit the desired fields.
  5. Click "Ok" to save the message filter.
  6. Click the red "X" in the top right corner to close "Message Filters".

4. Reordering message filters

By reordering message filters, users alter the order in which the corresponding folders are displayed in the folder pane.

To reorder message filters:

  1. In the menu, select Tools > Message Filters.
  2. Click on the name of the message filter you want to reorder.
  3. In the right hand menu, click on either "Move Up" or "Move Down" to reorder a message filter.
  4. Click the red "X" in the top right corner to close "Message Filters".
