CS Undergraduate Recruiting Committee Minutes

Committee Members:Committee Members: Ashraf Aboulnaga, Dan Brown (ex officio, Director of First Year Studies), Khuzaima Daudjee, Chrysanne DiMarco, Sandy Graham, Mark Giesbrecht (Chair), Tian Kou, Ian McKillop, Tamer Özsu (ex officio, Director of School), Frank Tompa (ex officio, Director of Undergraduate Studies), Troy Vasiga, Justin Wan (ex officio, Undergraduate Admission).

Present: Ashraf Aboulnaga, Khuzaima Daudjee, Mark Giesbrecht, Tian Kou, Troy Vasiga, Justin Wan.

  1. Updates on Fall Open House preparation
    • Troy and Dan will be doing CS sessions (in MC)
    • Ashraf will organize research lab tours:
      • Keshav tetherless open
      • Graphics, AI should be open
      • HCI: maybe
      • Other possibilities: SCG
      • Bioinformatics?
    • Exhibits: Ed and/or Michael will have an exhibit. Anna cannot.
    • Tian has arranged 8 display booths (may be too many but better safe)
    • Posters (Khuzaima): Justin, SE (images - borderline)
    • Mark has reel from kiosk.
    • Tian: big screen in DC great hall. - Saturday (extra $$), Tian will talk to A/V: Big monitor (we supply laptops)
    • Tian: Electrical power cord arrangement - Done
    • Tian: lunch, to be ordered .
    • Tian will get a full schedule from Gayle or Steve.
    • Call for participation. Faculty: arrange with Ian. Undergrads - ask faculty to recommend undergrads - does Gayle have CS undergrads (Mark will ask).
    • Troy: math clip on "Start your future" on main math page.

  2. Update on CS4U Preparation
    • Mark needs to start pressure re volunteers
    • Hands on activity - Tian looked CS unplugged, and proposes:
      • binary numbers (too easy)
      • being a fax machine
        • encrypted images
        • compressed images
    • Very difficult to do computer-based hands-on activity due to equipement, time constraints
    • Need as many grad students as possible (minimal 5)
    • Call for help re. grad students.
    • Hands-on activity trial run needed?
    • Mark will invite industrial speaker
    • posters printed, invitations printed, everything should be sent out this week
    • send a pile to Steve Brown, Sandy
    • announcement to CS and request to distribute posters

  3. Presentation and discussion of CS Undergraduate Recruitment effort survey results
    • Tian provided summary at the meeting
    • Tian will do survey this term in November on first year students
    • Tian will produce report of 2007 Winter survey when the rush is over.
