  1. Postmortem/discussion of Ontario University Fair (September 28-30, 2007)
  • Response was generally positive from faculty and staff participants.
  • Space for CS was not proportional to relative interest in Computer Science. If and when we redesign the physical presence of the UW booth this should be respected: CS brings more team members, far more potential students.
  • An overall comment on the layout of the UW display is that it is difficult to see signs for other faculties/departments, so visitors often start at the wrong place.
  • Another weakness in design is that terminals (for requesting more information) are at the ends of the UW display. This is not accessible to Math. There should be kiosks all the way along.
  • For the benefit of those working at the OUF it would be very desireable to have much better padding under the carpet, and to have the carpet extend farther out from the wall.
  • Troy and others indicated some concern that OUF was not worth the large effort. Tian will bring survey numbers to provide some idication of effectiveness.
  • It would be good to have some interesting giveaways (the Ryerson bag was very nice, and good advertising).

  • Planning for Fall Open House (Nov. 3, 2007)
    • CS runs their own events from 11:30-1:30.
    • Want lab tours, displays in great hall, food in fish bowl, faculty and staff reps available.
    • CS also needs people to populate tables outside Math information sessions (Ian will organize this).
    • Lab tours (Ashraf to organize): Possible labs: AI, Graphics, Tetherless, SciCom, HCI.
      • Consult Kate Larson/Martin Karten for maps and info
    • Exhibits: Sandy will approach people.
      • Possibilities include Ed Lank (Pen/PDA interfaces), Michael Terry (HCI), Graphics (Craig), Anna Lubiw (origami)
      • Tian will arrange display booths/tables/chairs etc.
    • Should get some undergraduate-accessible posters (Khuzaima will organize)
    • Run graphics videos/slides (Mark talks to Steve Mann and others)
    • A/V people: set up big screen (Tian to arrange)
    • Electrical power (Tian to arrange)
    • Lunch - Tian will arrange.
    • Who is giving information session talks for CS: 1.5 hours in morning and afternoon (10-11:30, 1:30-3).
      • Troy will investigate.

  • Planning for CS4U (Nov. 17, 2007)
    • Mark will invite speakers
      • opening speaker, plus 4 presentations, plus industrial speaker
    • Hands-on activity (Tian)
    • Hands on possibilities: CS unplugged. kinesthetic learning
    • Extra day for a school to come for another CS4U: December 10.
      • Tian is looking into room bookings
    • Poster is agreed upon and to be sent to printer (Tian)
    • Sandy to give it out at ACSE and post on their site.
    • Tian will mail to all high schools in Ontario and GVMA
    • Need to get the web site and automatic registration form available.
    • Get info to local schools.
    • Invitations: use Open House invitation format for CS4U (Tian)
    • Consider revisiting questions on invitation (Sandy)
    • Need to recruit grad students/undergrad students
