Research Interests

Professor Wong's research program is concerned with performance evaluation of computer systems and networks. In recent years, topics investigated by Professor Wong and his PhD students are deadline-based packet scheduling, delivery of dynamic information, and scalability of distributed virtual environments. Deadline-based packet scheduling was shown to be an effective approach to meet delivery deadlines. Research contributions include the design of scheduling and admission control algorithms in support of real-time document delivery. With web caching and dynamic content, cached pages may become stale if the server is not able to transmit page updates immediately. Guidelines for caching pages and transmission of updates were developed. In distributed virtual environments, research results showed that a two-level hierarchical architecture has good properties in terms of scalability.

Professor Wong's current research is focused on autonomic resource provisioning in a data centre which has heterogeneous computing resources and supports a diverse set of applications. These applications may have varying workloads and performance requirements. There is a cost associated with resource usage. The objective is to investigate dynamic resource management algorithms that meet the service level agreement of each application while keeping the usage cost to a minimum, and to evaluate the effectiveness of these algorithms on a virtual computing infrastructure.

Major Awards

David R. Cheriton Faculty Fellowship, University of Waterloo (2005-2008); Faculty of Mathematics Fellow, University of Waterloo (2001-2004)

Industrial and Sabbatical Experience

Professor Wong has spent three sabbatical leaves at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory (1981 to 1982, 1988 to 1989, and 1995 to 1996), working on token ring performance, gigabit per second local and metropolitan area networks, and Internet telephony, respectively. Since 1996, he has been a visiting scientist at the IBM Toronto Laboratory Centre for Advanced Studies.
