Research Interests

Dr. Pidduck's research interests are in information systems management, software engineering and electronic commerce. She is particularly interested in the interactions among information systems, businesses and people.

Recent research has focused on the effectiveness of electronic communication and group support systems compared to face-to-face communication. In the business environment, successful systems of this nature may have positive implications for invalid, mobile and virtual workers. Related health research is investigating whether electronic social networks, including e-mail, FaceBook and similar technologies, provide the same health benefits as physical social networks. This work extends the business communication ideas to produce healthy, productive employees.

Software project management issues in large-scale enterprise systems are also of interest. This may include electronic business, risk management, control of strategic alliances, software quality, cost and other resources. Current expectations of collaborative software development, short delivery times, minimal cost, and an 'always on' working environment may compromise software quality and usability. Dr. Pidduck's work addresses active planning for software reuse and portability in a balanced software development work environment to mitigate these problems. Her continuing approach to the problem of partner selection has been to develop a decision support system model based on a number of case study interviews, extended to collaborations among software development organizations.

Industrial and Sabbatical Experience

Before coming to the University of Waterloo, Anne had 15 years of business experience in the construction industry, in expediting, and in information systems management. Her most recent experience was as Director, Management Information Systems with the Ontario Nurses Association and the Construction Safety Association, working with the Workers' Compensation Board, the Ontario Hospital Association and the Hospital Safety Association to reduce workplace accidents and injuries. Technology was used strategically to identify areas of high risk, to improve working conditions, and for associated cost reduction.

In 1996 and 1997, Anne spent a year developing an Information Systems research group and practice for KPMG Management Consulting in Southwestern Ontario. Business executives and consultants worked together on proposals and projects related to IS Reviews and Risk Management for municipalities, the hardware industry and several health-related information technology projects. Industry concerns included information systems strategy, executive information systems and business process re-engineering. Strategic and technology services were evaluated for health organizations in Perth District, Halton County, and London-Middlesex.
