News: CS PhD graduate receives Waterloo outstanding achievement award

2010 Jun 21

Congratulations to Reza Dorrigiv for receiving Waterloo's Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies award for a PhD student. After several years of graduate studies under the supervision of Alex Lopez-Ortiz, Reza says it is “a good feeling to have [his] work recognized”. He also feels honoured to be one of the chosen few Waterloo graduates who received this award during the university's 100th Convocation last week. Learn what Reza has to say about CS grad studies at Waterloo!

Waterloo Experience

“I really enjoyed my graduate studies at Waterloo. The Algorithms and Complexity group was a very friendly group where professors treated grad students as their peers. I was lucky to have Alex Lopez-Ortiz as my supervisor. He helped me in all aspects of my grad studies and constantly encouraged me to get involved in various academic and non-academic activities.”

Research and Teaching

“I had access to various resources for research and teaching. I benefited from many great talks by top researchers in different fields either from the group seminars or from the distinguished lecture series. I was given the opportunity to teach some courses as a grad student and also had access to various teaching resources through the Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE). Through CTE, I completed the Certificate in University Teaching and considerably improved my teaching skills.”

Social Activities

“I also enjoyed various non-academic events. I was a part of the CS intramural soccer team for several terms. I got to organize the Persian New Year Exhibition at the school and attended most of the school's parties and get-togethers.”

About Reza

Reza successfully defended his thesis, entitled "Alternative Measures for the Analysis of Online Algorithms", in February. He is currently doing a post-doc with our school and is teaching two courses for us.

Congratulations Reza!
