At the recent convocation, Jie Zhang, a graduate of the PhD program in Computer Science won the Alumni Gold Medal for outstanding academic performance.
Jie provided these remarks about his experience at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science: “It is very fortunate to have been a student of Professor Robin Cohen. Her endless care, great effort and encouragement have led me to today's achievement and to my future career in academia. It is also a memorable experience to study in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science and to work with the excellent professors (such as Professors Kate Larson, Raouf Boutaba, Ming Li and Bin Ma) and the talented students (such as Jun Fung, Aaditeshwar Seth and Umar Farooq Minhas), from whom I have also learned a lot.”
“It was such a pleasure to be interacting with Jie during his PhD studies, remarked his supervisor, Dr. Robin Cohen, who joined Jie, his wife and others October 24th for a dinner celebrating CS convocants. “Jie works tirelessly to generate and publish new research results. He has over 30 publications already to date -- an amazing record for a recent PhD graduate.”
Jie was also able to initiate joint research with no fewer than four different colleagues, during his PhD program. Jie was one of our very first Cheriton Scholarship awardees, another honour that was very well deserved.
Jie’s thesis. entitled "Promoting Honesty in E-Marketplaces: Combining Trust Modeling and Incentive Mechanism Design" and his work had won the best paper awards at 2009 IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management and the 2006 Canadian Semantic Web Working Symposium.
Currently a post-doc at the University of Saskatchewan, Jie accepted a faculty position at Nanyang Technical University in Singapore which will begin next September 2010.
