A street in UW's north campus Research and Technology Park is being named for a long-time Computer Science faculty member. The "South Service Road", which runs east-west and crosses Hagey Boulevard, will now be called "Frank Tompa Drive." The headquarters of Open Text Corporation, the company Prof. Tompa helped to found in 1991, will be located on the street.
Prof. Tompa
has combined
a very distinguished academic career with enormous entrepreneurial success.
At Waterloo since 1974, he has served as both Chair of the Department and
Director of the School of Computer Science. He was a leader of the UW
research team that worked with the Oxford University Press in the 1980s to
use innovative text management technology to create the second edition of
the
Oxford
English Dictionary.
Software created
for the OED project led to the 1991 creation of Open Text Corporation, the
market leader in electronic content management, and one of UW's outstanding
spinoff successes. Open Text now employs over 2000 people worldwide.
For his part, Prof. Tompa is delighted with the name. "It's an incredible honour... I am thankful to the University for considering and approving the street name and to Open Text for believing that having its corporate headquarters on Frank Tompa Drive sounds appropriate."
