Lukasz Golab, a PhD candidate in the Database Group supervised by Professor Tamer Özsu, was awarded one of ten Bell Canada 125th Anniversary Scholarships at a ceremony at the Bell University Laboratory Symposium on November 8th.
A second scholarship was awarded to Jaewook Chung, a graduate student in E&CE working with Anwar Hasan, bringing Waterloo's success rate to one-fifth of the Canada-wide scholarships.
Each of the ten recipients receives a one-time scholarship of $12,500 to continue their studies at a post-graduate level (Masters or PhD). The scholarships have been awarded to students studying in a variety of fields including wireless communications, photonics, satellite communications, computer science, cryptology and sociology.
Lukasz's research focuses on a new type of database: a data stream management system (DSMS). DSMSs are used for processing streams of live data, such as Internet packet traces, stock price tickers, and sensor measurements. The fundamental problem that he is addressing in his thesis is query processing over sliding windows of recently collected stream data.
More information about the scholarship is available from a Bell press release
