Michael Yu-Kae Cheng from the Artificial Intelligence Group in the School of Computer Science has been awarded the prestigious Alumni Gold Medal, which annually recognizes the top Masters student at the University.
Michael completed his Masters thesis in May 2005, under the supervision of Prof. Robin Cohen. His thesis research has already resulted in four publications at premier venues, a remarkable achievement for a Masters student.
Of the award, Cheng says modestly, "I'm quite surprised, but very honoured, to be receiving this award. I couldn't have done it without the support from my family, friends, and the fine faculty here at UW, especially my supervisor, Prof. Robin Cohen."
According to Prof. Cohen, "Michael stands out in my mind as someone who is not only a brilliant student academically but also someone who is truly gifted in research, developing original, deep and complex theories, articulated very carefully and concisely. His Masters thesis incorporated no less than four major theories, any one of which would have been sufficient for a Masters thesis. He has contributed to the advancement of all three of the fields of multiagent systems, intelligent interaction and user modeling."
Cheng is currently working at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington.
