News: Black and Gold Strike Again

2005 Nov 08

UW's Team Black and Team Gold have placed first and second respectively in the 2005 ACM East Central North America Regional Programming Contest, held on Saturday November 5, 2005.

Team Black, whose members are Tor Myklebust, David Pritchard and Kats Gupta, was, at the 29-minute mark, the third team to solve one of the eight problems in the five-hour contest. They solved their second problem at 42 minutes, and their third at 43, surging ahead to finish all eight problems in 153 minutes - just three minutes past half-time! They handily beat out 113 teams drawn from 65 colleges and universities in the region, including University of Toronto, Carnegie Mellon, and Purdue.

Team Gold, consisting of Michael Druker, Yin (Jack) Zhao and Simon Parent followed in hot pursuit, solving their first problem in 34 minutes and finishing in 220 minutes for a strong second place.

According to team coach Gordon Cormack, "One of the most satisfying aspects of my position at Waterloo is my opportunity to work with these brilliant and fascinating individuals, and to bask in their reflected glory."

The ACM contest is the oldest, largest and most prestigious programming contest in the world. Inaugurated in 1977, the contest now includes tens of thousands of students from over 1500 universities in 71 countries. Awards, prizes, scholarships, and bragging rights are all at stake as winners of regional contests advance to the ACM Programming Contest World Finals.

This year's finals will be held April 9-13, 2006 in San Antonio, Texas. Waterloo has won gold four of the last six years, in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2005.

Let's have another, shall we?
