2004 Jan 16
Shraddha Pai and Gerald Quon, both pursuing Co-op Honours degrees in Computer Science/Bioinformatics Option, have been selected for Honorable Mention in the Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Award for 2004. The primary criterion for selection is significant research contributions, but an outstanding academic record and service to the computing or broader community are also required.
Each year, CRA solicits nominations for the awards from all computing departments in universities anywhere in Canada or the U.S. Each department may nominate up to two male and two female candidates.
This year's nominees were a very impressive group. Many of the professors writing supporting letters commended the students for making significant contributions to more than one research project, several nominees were authors or coauthors on multiple papers, others had made presentations at major conferences, and some had produced software artifacts that were in widespread use. Many of the nominees had "straight A" averages and had been involved in successful summer research or internship programs, many had been teaching assistants, tutors, or mentors, and several had significant involvement in community volunteer efforts.
The winners of the award for 2004 were Anna Cavender (University of Oregon) and Thuc Vu (Carnegie Mellon University), with Ethan Eade (Duke University) and Heather Wake (University of South Carolina) as runners-up. Joining Shraddha and Gerald, 72 other undergraduates from 42 other universities were also recognized by CRA as being outstanding. Details will be printed in the January issue of Computing Research News and posted on CRA's website.
With this achievement, Shraddha and Gerald share recognition by CRA with former undergraduates Ian Goldberg and Ke Yee Yeung (1995), Ka-Ping Yee (1996), Michael Brown and Ondrej Lhotak (2001), and Brett Flegg and Yuli Ye (2003). Congratulations!
