News: Waterloo Alumnus receives ACM SIGCOMM 2003 Award

At this year's ACM SIGCOMM conference, Professor David R. Cheriton received the prestigious ACM SIGCOMM Award for outstanding lifetime technical achievements in the fields of data and computer communications.

Professor Cheriton is an alumnus of the School of Computer Science of the University of Waterloo and received his PhD on "Multi-Process Structuring and the Thoth Operating System" in 1978 under the supervision of Michael A. Malcolm. In 1995, David Cheriton was a co-founder of Granite Systems, an early developer of Gigabit Ethernet products. Granite was was subsequently acquired by Cisco Systems.

Previous winners of the ACM SIGCOMM Award include other Internet pioneers, such as Leonard Kleinrock, Vint Cerf, Jon Postel, and Van Jacobson. The School of Computer Science congratulates Professor Cheriton on this achievement. Professor Cheriton has also received a 2003 Faculty of Mathematics Alumini Achievement Medal.
