The UW teams placed first and third at the East Central Region of the ACM Programming Contest on Saturday, November 9, 2003. This means a Waterloo team will be in the contest's international finals for the twelfth consecutive year.
The Waterloo Black team, made up of first-year students Ralph Furmaniak (Pure Mathematics and Computer Science) and Matei Zaharia (Computer Science), and graduate student Lars Hellsten (Computer Science) won the contest by solving seven problems in the day's competition. The Waterloo Gold team, undergraduates Tor Myklebust (Pure Mathematics), Jonathan Lee (pure mathematics and Computer Science) and William Slofstra (computer science), solved six problems, but took slightly longer than second-place University of Toronto and was ranked third. The final standings, along with copies of the problem sets are available from the Ashland regional site.
The finals will be held next March 28-April 1 in Prague, Czech Republic.
