New Assistant Professor Urs Hengartner joins CS from the renowned program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. His research is in distributed computer systems and security; specifically, the complex security and privacy issues relating to future computing environments, where enormous amounts of sensitive personal information will be stored. His research aims to minimize the amount of information that individuals need to reveal about themselves while exploiting such an environment.
He looks forward to the challenges ahead, stating, "From a professional point of view, it's exciting, since Waterloo has a top Computer Science department. It is large and dynamic, so there is lots of potential for collaboration."
Originally from Switzerland, Professor Hengartner is a skilled downhill skier, but says he looks forward to exploring Waterloo's fine cross-country ski trails. A true internationalist, he has even expressed some interest in the uniquely Canadian sport of curling.
